TRANSFORMERS (BASIC)

branch ELECTROMAGNETISM & INDUCTION

Transformers can be used to change AC voltage. This is done using changing magnetic fields created by the constantly changing current in AC. Two coils connected with a ferrous core will provides extremely good flux linkage between them as the field is transmitted uniformly through the core. Confirm this effect with two coils and an iron core between them. This effect is called '''Mutual Inductance'''. [image:https://i.imgur.com/wgCKtEL.jpg] If AC is used in one coil, EMF is induced in the other as the flux is constantly changing. If N for each coil is different, the EMF induced will be different in the second coil. $$\frac{V_p}{V_s} = \frac{N_p}{N_S}$$ V~S~ and V~P~ can both represent either RMS or Peak voltage Energy is always lost however as eddy currents can build in the core as it too is a conductor, but theoretically the power should be the same for both so: $$P_p= P_s= V_p I_p= V_s I_s$$ One way of reducing the effect of eddy currents is to use thin slabs of iron separated by insulation so current pathways are minimised. This is called laminating.
