Neptunes Necklace

branch ECOLOGY

Adaptations:

Structural:

  • Tough modified leaves with small bladders (pockets) that store water to prevent getting dehydrated.
  • Bladders also contain air enabling it to float above other plants and compete for light.
  • Strong attachments to rocks to prevent being washed away by waves.

Functional (Physiological):

  • Slime coat that helps prevent drying out when exposed to to air / wind.

Behavioural

  • Growing in big groups reduces the surface area that's exposed / helps trap water between branches. This helps prevent drying out during low tide when it's exposed / out of the water.
