NAMING IONIC COMPOUNDS

branch MATTER & ATOMS

=Naming Ionic Compounds= Ionic Compounds always consist of a metal (cation) and non-metal (anion) ===Rules for naming Ionic Compounds=== # '''The name of the metal goes first''' # '''A compound consisting of only two elements will end in –ide (e.g. FeS = Iron Sulphide)''' # '''Many compounds also contain oxygen (in addition to a metal & non-metal). In this case oxygen is left out of the name, but the ending is simply changed to -ate or -ite (e.g. CuSO~4~ = Copper Sulphate)''' Note that a few metals can form more than one type of ion. For instance Iron (Fe) can form either a 2^+^ or 3^+^ ion. In this case a roman numeral is used to indicate which one. For instance: [image:http://i.imgur.com/p3gc6aa.png?1]
