HOMO SAPIENS

branch HUMAN EVOLUTION

Coming from HOMO HEIDELBERGENSIS
=Homo sapiens= Anatomically modern forms of ''Homo sapiens'' first appear about 200,000 years ago in Africa, spreading to Europe about 40,000 years ago. The Earliest european ''sapiens'' are referred to as '''Cro-Magnons'''. ==Body== Anatomically modern humans have less robust skeletons suggesting they had become dependent on technology rather than on raw physical power to meet the challenges of their environment. Our skeletons have continued to become more gracile with time. The limb bones tend to be longer ==Skull== [image:http://i.imgur.com/CltsZ3S.png?3] Modern humans have an average brain size of about 1350 cc. The forehead rises sharply, brow ridges are very small / absent and the chin is prominent. The vertical forehead in humans houses a larger fore-brain, so that the brain sits above rather than behind the eyes . The vertical forehead may also have played an important role in communication through eyebrow movements and forehead skin wrinkling. Anatomically modern humans have a less pronounced occipital bun, a bulge at the back of the skull. ''Neanderthal brain pictured left & Homo sapien brain right'' Anatomically modern humans have smaller and even in the last 10,000 years our teeth have reduced in size by approximately 10%. The use of fire and tools mean there was less reliance on the jaw muscles resulting in a reduced, more gracile jaw.
