HALOALKANES

branch ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Coming from ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
=What are Haloalkanes?= Haloalkanes are organic compounds with halogen atoms attached. Halogens are the atoms in group 17 (F, Cl, Br, I) and bond to carbon atoms with a single bond. However because the branches are now halogen atoms, we must use special prefixes to describe each atom in group 17. F = Fluoro- Cl = Chloro- Br = Bromo- I = Iodo- Remember to number the position of the halogen atom! The example above is named 1-chlorobutane. The example below is named 1,2-dichlorobutane.
